Alfred Thomas Berg

Edith Atkinson was nineteen years old when she married Alfred Berg in 1912. Alfred was thirty-five years old.

Alfred and Edith had ten children, with one, Norman Alfred, dying in infancy.

My father was born on the 13th November, 1922 in Bankstown, New South Wales. His birth was registered as Alfred Thomas Berg, but he was called Tommy by his parents and siblings. To others, he was known as Tom. He was the sixth child and third son of Alfred and Edith.

Dad enlisted in the Army for war service on the 14th October, 1941, at Area 53D Bankstown. He enlisted as Thomas Alfred Berg; he was almost nineteen years old.

In later years, Dad signed Alfred Thomas on official documents, but he was always known as Tom or Tommy. Before he enlisted, Dad was an assistant projectionist at the Regent Theatre, Punchbowl.

According to Tommy’s Army records, he was 5ft 9ins tall, with blue eyes, fair complexion, and fair hair.
